Australian Laws
Although the Australian lifestyle is “laid back” and we enjoy a lot of freedom; we say what we like, dress how we like, live where we like and choose who we have relationships with. We do have strict laws, that even you as a tourist/visitor will need to respect, even if they different from your laws back home.
A few of these include:
- Only 18 year olds and above can purchase cigarettes and alcohol
- Smoking in public places in prohibited
- Selling, buying and possessing illicit drugs is illegal
- Carrying weapons is forbidden
- When riding a bicycle you must wear a helmet
- When driving a car you must have a drivers’ license, obey the road rules and be driving a registered vehicle
- It is against the law to act our in violence and show discrimination- including religion, disability, sexual preference, etc- towards other people, including family members
- If a crime has been committed on you, you should contact your local police station, they are trustworthy and approachable and give you the appropriate assistance.
- Even international students have right and responsibilities when working in Australia.
